castle stansted mountfichet

It is the start of our stint of looking after Esme and Rocco for part of their summer school holiday. Louisa, Julian and Tove and Harper join us. Harper is rapidly growing up and is a confident little one plus something year-old clutching a football, which is apparently his FIRST word! The uncanny connection with David Beckham continues.

We decide to go to the children’s attraction at Castle Mountfichet in Stansted Mountfichet. I had some slight misgivings as we had been there a long time ago and I had vague memories of a place a bit like Wookey Hole. Especially as the Norman castle is linked with dinosaurs and a haunted house!

However, it vastly exceeded my expectations and was a real pleasure. I loved the chickens, peacockes and ducks wandering around amongst the deer. The haunted house scared Esme and Rocco and Tove wouldn’t go in. The toy museum was a colossal extension of my meagre collection of cannons and such like. I did, though, buy at £25 a small collection of lead animals  – so maybe my own museum  will eventually come.
